Day 38 The Power of OneThursday August 30
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Romans 1:20
The giant Redwood trees are one of the most beautiful natural wonders of God’s creation. They are the tallest trees in the world and in fact, the largest reaches a height of over 370 feet, which makes it the tallest living thing on earth." Redwoods are also some of the oldest trees, typically living more than 600 years but some can be as old as 2000 years.
For all their magnificence, one would think the redwoods would require a deep root system to keep them upright. Normally trees have one primary root, called a taproot, that grows vertically downward and through which it receives its nutrients and water. If a tree is 30 feet tall, it may have a taproot that goes as much as 30 feet deep.
But not redwoods. Typically their roots go only 10-15 feet deep. Once they reach this depth, they begin to spread out laterally, extending hundreds of feet, intertwining with the roots of the redwoods surrounding them. Together the roots share nutrients and fight off diseases. That’s why you will never find redwoods existing alone; they are always found clustered together in groves. In fact, they trees can grow so closely together that their trunks merge into one and it’s not until you look to the height of the tree that you realize that its actually many trees extending from one huge foundation.
This unique interlocking root system securely supports and sustains these giant trees when storms strike and fierce winds blow. The trees’ longevity and strength depends on the combined support of one another.
What an amazing picture of the power of oneness.
Today let us meditate on this wonderful story from creation and trust the Lord to open our hearts to receive the treasures of His wisdom that are contained in it. Let’s pray this prayer together.
Father I thank you for the abundance of amazing and creative ways you choose to speak to us about Your nature and Your ways. Today Lord I ask you to give me ears to hear what Your spirit is saying through this story of the redwoods. And Father please open the eyes of my heart and understanding that I may be more sensitive to the many ways in which you are speaking to me every day. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen!
We look forward to hearing what the Lord is showing you!
